BBS is a term used to describe a group of Copper Marans (BCM) chickens that come in three color varieties: Blue, Black, and Splash. These colors are genetically linked, so breeding them together can produce chicks in all three shades depending on the parent combination. Blue Marans have a soft, slate-blue feathering; Black Marans are a rich, glossy black; and Splash Marans are light colored birds with lightly speckled markings. Because these colors are connected genetically, breeders often use the term BBS to indicate that buyers may receive a mix of the three when purchasing hatching eggs or chicks.
Like all Marans, BBS Marans are especially prized for their dark chocolate-colored eggs, which are among the darkest of any chicken breed. Their eggs are not only beautiful but also large and consistently well-shaped, making them excellent additions to a mixed rainbow egg basket. In temperament, this line of Marans are generally calm, hardy, and easy to work with. They tend to be friendly birds that do well in a variety of climates, and they’re reliable foragers if given the space. Although not the most prolific layers compared to commercial breeds, they produce a respectable number of eggs annually and often continue laying through cooler months. Their dual-purpose heritage also makes them somewhat larger birds, which historically contributed to their value on farms.
Whether kept for their striking appearance, their rare and highly sought-after egg color, or their steady temperament, Marans are a versatile and rewarding breed to add to your coop. Their unique combination of beauty, utility, and gentle nature makes them a standout choice for poultry enthusiasts who want both function and visual appeal in their flock.
