Welsummer chickens are a beloved heritage breed originating from the village of Welsum in the Netherlands. Developed in the early 1900s, they were created by selectively crossing local Dutch birds with breeds such as Rhode Island Reds, Barnevelders, and Leghorns. The result is a hardy, attractive dual-purpose chicken known for both its strong egg production and its striking, rustic appearance. Welsummers are easily recognized by their warm partridge coloring, with hens displaying soft brown and black penciling and roosters showing deep reds, golds, and glossy black feathers.

One of the Welsummer’s most celebrated traits is its beautifully dark, speckled eggs. Their eggs have a rich, reddish-brown color often covered in darker freckles, making each egg distinct. The pigment sits on the surface of the shell rather than within it, so the speckling can vary from egg to egg. While not as dark as a Marans egg, Welsummer eggs are still some of the most decorative in the backyard flock and are prized by both hobby keepers and small homesteads. They’re also reliable layers, producing a steady supply of medium to large eggs throughout most of the year.

In terms of temperament, Welsummers are generally friendly, alert, and confident birds. They tend to be excellent foragers and thrive in free-range environments where they can hunt for insects and explore. Their active nature makes them good at avoiding predators, yet they are usually calm around people and integrate well into mixed flocks. They are hardy in a variety of climates and have good disease resistance, which adds to their appeal for beginners and experienced poultry keepers alike.

Whether chosen for their appearance, their signature speckled eggs, or their lively but approachable personality, Welsummer chickens bring both beauty and productivity to a flock. They are a classic, dependable breed with a rich history and remain a favorite among keepers who appreciate birds that are as visually striking as they are useful.

Our line of Welsummers are usually sexable at hatch but not 100%. We do breed towards this, but they are not 100%. We have the Clutch of Color line of Welsummers.
