Crele Penedesenca chickens are a rare and striking variety of the Penedesenca breed, which originates from the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain. Known primarily for producing some of the darkest naturally pigmented eggs in the world, Penedesencas were developed for both hardiness and productivity in a Mediterranean climate. The Crele variety stands out for its beautiful barred patterning—soft, alternating bands of cream, gold, and black that give the bird a classic, almost antique look. Roosters in particular display vivid crele coloration with rich chestnut tones and well-defined barring, while hens have a more subtle, elegant version of the pattern.

What makes Crele Penedesencas especially unique is their egg color and laying consistency. They lay deep terracotta-colored eggs, often with an earthy matte finish that sets them apart from the shiny chocolate eggs of breeds like Marans.
